Ancient Lake

Located within the reservation boundaries of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe 30 miles north of Reno/Sparks. This body of water is the terminal point of the Truckee River flowing from Lake Tahoe. A remnant of an ancient lake once covering much of the Great Basin. The Needles pictured above are on the northern end of the lake. These were formed underwater during a period when the surface was approximately 600 feet higher. This is the home of the prehistoric cui-cui (kwee-wee) fish, now a protected species. The fisheries maintains a population of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout enjoyed by anglers. The Cultural Center in Nixon located on the Southern end of the Lake houses many artifacts from the historic residents of this area.
